A sensible wash routine
How often should you wash a dog?
Dogs do not all need the same washing interval. Lifestyle, coat density, odour, shedding and a veterinarian’s skin plan can all change the schedule.

Short answer
Wash when dirt, odour, coat maintenance or a professional treatment makes it useful. Use dog-specific products, rinse very thoroughly and dry dense coats completely.
Decide from coat and skin
A muddy short coat may only need rinsing, while a dense coat may need professional drying. Prescribed dermatological routines should follow veterinary instructions rather than general grooming advice.
- Check skin before washing
- Use products intended for dogs
- Seek veterinary advice for recurring irritation
Prevent washing from creating mats
Remove loose tangles first, avoid rough towel rubbing and dry from the skin outward. Remaining dampness and friction can compact long, curly and double coats.
- Brush before water
- Rinse longer than expected
- Comb after complete drying
Know when odour is not a grooming issue
Strong or quickly returning odour, redness, discharge, wounds, ear pain or persistent scratching can indicate a medical problem. A groomer can notice changes but does not diagnose them.
- Persistent odour needs investigation
- Pain or inflammation: veterinarian
- Do not mask symptoms with perfume

Practical details
Is weekly washing harmful?
Frequency alone is not the whole issue; product choice, skin condition, rinsing and drying matter. Ask a veterinarian for skin disease.
Can I use human shampoo?
Use a suitable dog product unless a veterinarian has prescribed something else.
