Doodle coat routine
Doodle coat care: brushing, washing and grooming schedule
Doodle coats vary widely, but many combine curl, density and loose hair that stays trapped. A fluffy surface can therefore hide tight mats underneath.

Short answer
Many doodles need professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks plus line brushing several times a week. A metal comb should pass from skin to tip after every session.
Brush beneath the fluffy surface
Lift the coat in narrow lines and brush one section at a time from the skin outward. Follow with a metal comb, especially behind ears, around the collar, in armpits, groin, legs and tail.
- Brush plus comb, not brush alone
- Use a non-slip surface
- Hold hair near the skin to reduce pulling
Wash only when you can dry fully
Remove loose tangles before bathing, use dog-specific products and rinse thoroughly. Dense curls must dry to the skin; remaining dampness encourages tangles and can irritate skin.
- Do not rub wildly with a towel
- Keep air and heat comfortable
- Comb again after drying
Choose maintenance over maximum length
A shorter practical trim can be kinder when home brushing time is limited. Discuss lifestyle, swimming, clothing and the dog’s tolerance so the chosen length remains achievable.
- Often schedule 6–8 weeks
- Start puppy handling early
- Shorter is not a failure when it improves comfort

A suitable slicker plus a metal comb is common, but tool size and firmness should match the individual coat.
